Exploring Stanage Edge, Peak District
Well known as a climbers paradise, Stanage Edge has over 2,000 routes and is the home to the UK's longest recorded rock climb; the 5,000m Girdle Traverse.
Not only that, the 3.5 mile long cliffs and breath taking views belong on every walkers list of places to visit!
Be Sure to Take a Pic!
Stanage Edge boasts quite the history, with the most notable being it's ties to Robin Hood.
Located in the upper part of the escarpment, you will find a small cave and ledge which is known as Robin Hood's Cave. It is believed this was used as a hideaway!
Whilst there are stunning views at every point along the edge, this spot is definitely our favourite.

Where to Start?
First things first, parking... there are several options but we recommend Hollin Bank Car Park, S32 1BR.
If you're struggling for a spot or wish for an alternative car park, check out Hook's Carr Car Park or Upper Burbage Car Park.
Starting the walk... at the rear of Hollin Bank Car Park you will find a path that leads you up to Stanage Edge.
The path should be clearly marked and shouldn't take you long to reach the clifftop. Be mindful that it can get steep and slippery (especially in the rain).
At the top... it's down to you, are you going left, or right?
Personally, we recommend you explore the right side as a definite, as this is where you will find the larger rock formations and Robin Hood's Cave!
The trig point (triangulation pillar)... the end of Stanage Edge where you now have the option to loop back round.
It is up to you whether you wish to head back the way you came (our favourite views) or extend your walk and follow the path to the left, instead of the right.
Where to Eat?
If you're like us, you're going to be starving at the end of your walk.
The nearest village is Hathersage which offers a number of restaurants, pubs and a bakery.
If you fancy the best breakfast around, you need to check out Bank House Aprés Bar - their Derbyshire Breakfast does not disappoint!!
If that doesn't tickle your fancy, there are plenty of other places to choose from.
FAQs
How High is Stanage Edge?
458m!
Is the Walk Difficult?
The walk is moderate to advanced, depending on the routes you wish to take.
The walk is mainly a test of stamina, and you must be careful on the uneven rock surfaces at the top.
We wouldn't recommend tackling the tight cave paths if you're not experienced or with someone who is.
And always take in to consideration the weather as well, the wetter it is, the slippier the rocks are!
Is it Suitable for Dogs?
Most definitely!
Is it busy?
We would recommend getting there early if you want to explore whilst it is quiet.
