Eyam

Derbyshire

A beautiful, historic village situated in the heart of Derbyshire, that offers a picturesque walk through the countryside and neighbouring village.

Getting There

You will want to head to the car park opposite Eyam Museum:

Eyam Museum, Hawkhill Road, Eyam, S32 5QP

If the weather is as treacherous as when we visited, you may wish to find alternative parking, but please be mindful of parking outside the locals houses.

Setting Off...

Turn left out of the car park onto Hawkhill Road, then take your first left at the Provisions shop onto Church Street.

Follow this road for quite a while until you reach the village centre. Along the way you will pass Eyam Hall, a little row of houses with plaques about the plague victims who lived and died there, and the village church.

This village is steeped in history, so be sure to take your time to absorb it all.

At the junction after the church, Church Street will split into two so keep to the left into the village centre.

Into the Trees...

Once you are in the village centre, you can find a few little tearooms and cafes to make a pit stop for coffee and cake.

Keep heading straight, passing Eyam Tea Rooms on your right, and you will reach the point where Church Street veers off left and becomes The Causeway.

Follow this round onto New Road until you reach a fork, where you will take Riley Lane on the left.

Continue along Riley Lane as it winds uphill through the trees. You will then reach another fork where you will keep to the right.

Exploring Pretty Wood...

The view will open up on your right, and you will pass Riley Graves on your left.

Just a short stretch along this road before the path dips down and you will find the entrance to Pretty Wood on your right.

Once you are in the woods look out for the little rope swing up the bank on your left hand side.

After you've had your fun on the swing, you want to get back on the path and follow it through the trees until you reach a little junction.

Here you will take a right and follow the path as it opens up into fields again and then subsequently joins up with the corner of New Road.

Halfway Point...

Once at the corner, you will need to veer left slightly before you can see a little dirt track over the road that will take you to your right.

Take care as this path is quite steep and rocky.

Stick to the main path on the right hand side, passing Stoney Middleton Cemetery on your left. You will eventually join up with the main road, The Nook.

Take a moment to explore the Roman Bath House that comes up on your right as you head into Stoney Middleton village.

Follow The Nook round as it bends to the left, past St. Martins Church and then to the right where you will come to a junction.

Heading Back...

At the junction turn right onto The Bank, follow this until you reach another right hand turn that then forks into two immediately.

Here you will take the left hand road, Bottom Clf, which you will follow round past a residents carpark, before finding a little gate on your left.

Go through the gate into the field and begin the steep climb to the top. Once at the top, take a breath and a seat on the Eyam Boundary Stone to enjoy the views.

At the end of the field you will go through another gate then a stone gap stile.

Follow this path straight past the sheep field on your right, onto the road through the residential area and along Lydgate road back into Eyam Village Centre.

Just a slow stroll back to the car from there!
